FINISH AND FUNCTIONALITY
STRUCTURE OF BRAKE PAD BY TOMEX BRAKES:
- SCORCHING
This is the top layer of the friction material that has undergone a special heat treatment to aid the bedding-in process. - FRICTION MATERIAL
This is the highest quality friction material the composition of which has been developed by the Tomex laboratory according to strictly defined parameters that meet the highest European standards. The high performance compound ensures comfort and durability as well as safety and braking performance. This layer is pressed, heated (“scorched”) and ground to produce a perfectly even surface of uniform consistency and exceptional strength. If required by the car manufacturer, chamfers and grooves are also ground to the OE parameters. - UNDERLAYER
This is the layer that supports the connection between the friction material and the backing plate, further reducing vibration in the brake system and thus brake squeal. - ADHESIVE
This is the top quality layer of the adhesive that bonds the surface of the backing plate to the underlayer. - BACKING PLATE
For easy installation and a perfect fit in the caliper, this precision cut plate is computer mapped to OE parameters. The plates are also sandblasted to mechanically remove any contaminants and to increase the surface area of the friction material. - SHIM
This special metal plate, covered on both sides with rubber, is fitted where specified by the car manufacturer. It reduces noise and prevents brake squeal throughout the life of the brake pad.
SCORCHING TECHNOLOGY
The advanced scorching technology used by Tomex burns the organic components from the top layer of the friction material. This process is carried out using state-of-the-art infrared lamps at a temperature of 600-800°C. This ensures a better adaptation of the pad to the disc, allowing high braking efficiency immediately after the pad has been fitted and reducing the bedding-in time. Scorching also helps reduce brake squeal. The process does not interfere with the backing plate.

PAD COATING
Brake pads by Tomex are powder coated using the state-of-the-art Tribo system, which ensures 100% uniform coverage of the pads with a consistent 40-80 micron coating thickness as required by the OE market. The coating used has high thermal and chemical resistance, protecting the pad from corrosion and environmental conditions, while also facilitating correct pad guidance in the caliper.
HOW TO CHOOSE BRAKE PADS
For accurate product selection, consider the following:
1. Right fit
2. Detailed list of parameters
3. Technical drawing of the product
As there are different types of brake pads on offer for the same generation of cars, it is necessary to consult a qualified mechanic before purchase in order to compare the part to be replaced with the technical drawing and the parameters specified in the listing.
BRAKE PADS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY
- The sound of the pads pressing against the disc, commonly referred to as brake squeal, is caused by the vibration of the pads during braking. In the case of brake pads by Tomex, this has been reduced to a minimum thanks to:
- the scorching technology (better adaptation of the friction layer to the brake disc);
- the reinforcing underlayer;
- the brake shim and/or chamfers (in the cars where this is required by the car manufacturer).
- Brake pads by Tomex are manufactured using a friction compound of exceptional quality that minimises the problem of rim contamination.
- Standard aftermarket brake pads wear out after an average of around 35,000 km. Pad wear is affected by the driving cycle (city driving wears the pads faster than motorway driving where we rarely stop), driving technique and even the load on the car.
- Replace the pads when:
- the thickness of the friction material is reduced to 2 mm;
- the pads on the same axle wear unevenly;
- the brake pad wear indicator light comes on.
Always replace the brake pads on both wheels of the same axle at the same time.
